WINTER IN BUDAPEST, HUNGARY: WHERE TO STAY AND WHAT TO DO

Budapest wasn’t initially on my travel radar. I ended up there because it was a cheaper route to my final destination, Vienna, where I intended to escape the dreaded “Y el Novio?” question during Thanksgiving dinner in 2018. (translation: “Do you have a boyfriend yet?”)

I didn’t have high expectations, but this underrated city totally blew me away and quickly became one of the most fun and memorable part of my winter Euro-trip. On my second night, I met a fellow Dominican solo traveler from Spain, and a lively Millennial duo from California. Together, we decided to join my favorite adult field trip—a pub crawl—that turned into one unforgettable night!

Nestled above thermal springs, Budapest is a city of eclectic ruin bars, stunning castles, epic history and enchanting Christmas markets. Whether you're looking for a quick winter getaway in Central Europe or a must-visit stop on your Euro-trip next summer, Budapest has it all.

Trip Type: Sightseeing, History Exploration, Eclectic Nightlife | Recommended duration: 3-4 days

WHERE TO STAY:

  • Baltazar Budapest: An intimate boutique hotel blending contemporary and vintage styles, featuring individually designed themed rooms in the heart of historic Buda Castle. This family-owned luxury boutique hotel is also home to Baltazar Grill, a Michelin-recommended restaurant.

  • Aria Hotel Budapest by Library Hotel Collection: A stunning boutique hotel inspired by our universal love language— music. Centrally located, this luxurious property offers complimentary breakfast each morning, along with a complimentary afternoon wine and cheese reception. At sunset, take in breathtaking panoramic views of downtown Budapest from its rooftop bar.

  • Hotel Gin Budapest: Perfect for solo adventurers and couples alike, this stylish and intimate hotel offers a comfortable stay in downtown Budapest, just a short walk from popular restaurants, bars, and major tourist attractions.

WHAT TO DO:

  • Free Walking Tour: A walking tour is always first order of business when I visit Europe. It’s a great way to get a sense of the lay of the land while learning about the city’s history, local culture and hidden gems. The tours are usually ran by locals who tend to provide great recommendations for authentic places to eat, things to do and avoid. Plus, it’s actually free although tips are customary. The free walking tours are ran in English and other languages and can last anywhere between 1.5 -2.5 hours.

    • Travel Pro-tip: Book your tour in advance!

  • Buda Castle: Did you know Budapest is divided into two parts: Buda and Pest? From Buda Castle, you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the Pest side, separated by the Danube River. Take a stroll through its enchanting courtyards, and immerse yourself in its rich history by exploring the museums and galleries. The castle is free to visit.

  • Sample Hungary’s famous wines in a local wine-tasting class

  • Visit Budapest's unique ruin bars: These abandoned warehouses, historic buildings, and empty parking lots have been transformed into eclectic venues, offering drinks, dancing, and food. They are among the city’s most famous and distinctive attractions.

  • Thermal baths— regardless of the weather, soak in one of Budapest’s open air thermal baths for a spa day of refreshment and relaxation.

  • Fisherman's Bastion— arguably the most picturesque spot in Budapest! I absolutely loved it here.

  • Join a pub crawl- Pub crawls are one of my favorite nightlife activities in Europe. Typically led by a local guide, you’ll get together with a group of fellow travelers for a fun night of bar hopping (usually visiting 3–4 spots). It’s a fantastic way to meet new foreigners and experience the local nightlife scene.

BUDAPEST TRAVEL PRO TIPS:

  • Transportation: Budapest is a highly walkable city with an incredibly reliable train system and citizens aged 65 and over can ride all public transportation within Budapest for free! Just be sure to carry a valid ID or passport to show inspectors.

  • Airport transfers: the Airport Express Bus is a convenient and cost-effective option to reach the city center in about 45 minutes. It runs daily between the airport and city center, with buses departing every 7–10 minutes during the day and every 30–40 minutes between midnight and 3 a.m at both stops. Tickets cost around €5–€6 per person, per trip, and can be purchased directly at the bus stop.

  • Hungarian Currency: Hungary’s official currency is the Hungarian Forint (HUF). While many stores and venues do accept Euros*, the exchange rate may not be in your favor. It’s best to exchange your dollars, Euros, or other currencies into Forint to get the most value for your money.
